Meals

Food is love. It is also one of the few pleasures afforded the elderly. We place a great deal of importance, not only on the food we serve, but the way we serve it. We shop weekly and use a plethora of fresh produce, meat and vegetables, avoiding frozen or canned products as much as possible. Residents are asked for suggestions, being mindful that favorite foods can elicit pleasant memories and, again, offer them opportunities for control.

Breakfast can be as formal or informal as the residents choose. There is no set menu or time to eat. Residents may rise when they choose (within reason) and eat what they please. Some residents want breakfast in bed or in their room. Some only want something light. Others want the full course. Starting the day on their own terms sets the tone for the rest of the day.

The main meal is served at noon and we encourage everyone to eat together, although it is not mandatory. It is a natural way to encourage interaction, socialization, and can stimulate appetite. Also, it is when we celebrate special occasions, like birthdays or anniversaries, often serving a meal of the resident’s choice.

Supper is a light meal and snacks are available any time.  Residents may have snacks in their room, but they should be contained in a manner to preserve freshness.

Special diets, as well as allergies, food preferences and dislikes are all accommodated. Fluids are encouraged and offered throughout the day.
